History
Somber Violets started in the spring of 2023 from bassist Josh Krebsbach to guitarist Patrick Sullivan. A simple text message from Josh, “Hey do you want to be in a goth band with me?” to which Patrick replied “Sure, it would give me an excuse to learn guitar again.” Quickly joined by singer Jerilyn Mitchell and drummer Brandon Davis.
The goal of the project was to learn how to be a band and go through all the steps; writing, recording, promoting, and playing live. In March 2024, the band had 5 original songs written and they traveled to Portland to record at a friend's house. Released in April, these songs made up their demo EP. Jerilyn departed the band shortly after to be replaced by new singer Jessica Hagen.
The band now has everything they needed to start playing live and have started booking shows at local venues like Central Saloon, Overkill Lounge, The Crypt and others.
Creative Style
We keep our musical style stripped down to a classic rock lineup. With ethereal vocals, haunting guitar, thundering bass and booming drums, we aim to create a space where the listener can relax and think about the darker shades of life. We draw a lot of inspiration from local bands like Nox Novacula. Our biggest inspirations come from Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Type O Negative, Vision Video, Urban Heat, and many of the other major post-punk and darkwave acts.
